Jubilee House Routines 2007-2008
Back to Jubilee House
Entering and exiting a classroom: This routine was established in order to prevent congestion in the hallways.
v Do not enter a classroom until the previous class has left.
v Stand back from the door until the students are out.
v Go directly to your desk and get ready for class.
In the morning you are not to enter the buildings until the bell rings. You are to wait on the black top until it is time to come in. You will have 5 minutes to get to your homebase, which is plenty of time.
Rotating Schedule: Every student is assigned 5 core classes, 2 exploratory classes, a SSR class, and a seminar class. Each school day will be different. What will be the same every day is:
v You will have nutrition break and lunch every day at the same time.
v You will have seminar class and SSR class every other day.
v Your core classes and exploratory classes will rotate so that you do not always have each class every day or at the same time. Please don’t worry about this. Your teacher will post the schedule each day and it is much simpler than it sounds.
Nutrition Break: This is to provide students a chance to eat a healthy snack in the morning.
v Nutrition break is for 10 minutes.
v You may eat snacks and have a drink.
v This is also a good time to use the restroom.
v No food and drink in the classroom.
Bathroom Procedure: You’re expected to take care of your bathroom requirements between classes.
Lockers: Individual lockers will be assigned. You will need to provide your own lock. Give your combination to your homebase teacher so that if/when you forget it your homebase teacher can help you remember. (A combination lock is better than a key lock) If you have PE, you will need another lock.
Lockers may be visited between classes. Put the books and papers you won’t need away and get out the ones you will need for your next class.
Bookbags, coats, lunches, etc. are not allowed in the classroom.
Plan ahead. You have 5 minutes to get supplies from your locker, go to the bathroom and be in your seat and ready to learn for the next class.
Lunch: Lunch is from 12:15-12:55. You may:
v Buy food in the cafeteria. If you purchase your lunch from the cafeteria, you need to eat in the cafeteria. Lunch trays may not be taken outside the cafeteria.
v Bring your own lunch. If you bring your own lunch you can eat outside or in the cafeteria.
Lunch time monitors are teachers too, and you will need to follow their directions.
Please: no outside litter and no visiting classrooms during lunch break unless you have a teacher’s permission and pass.
A 5-minute warning whistle or bell announces that lunch is nearly over, and you need to return to class. When the bell rings the second time, you should already be in your seat and ready for class. If you are not in your seat and ready for class, then you are tardy.
When you enter a classroom you need to get ready for instruction as quickly as possible. Each teacher will have a specific set of guidelines for his or her class. However there are some general rules, which you should follow:
· Be seated as quickly as possible.
· Take out any class books and supplies that you will need and put everything else away.
· Get out your homework. Check that you have your heading on your paper.
· Sharpen pencils.
· Check the board for specific instructions.
· Write down your plan of the day (POD) and leave your assignment book out and open to the correct day.
· Begin any work that you can.
Absences, late arrivals, and early departures: need to be cleared through the office.
· If you are absent for a full day bring a note from home and give it to the office before reporting to class.
· If you arrive late to school, first sign in at the office. A student pass will be given for you to enter the regular classroom.
· If you need to leave early, show your note to the office before homebase. Please also give the classroom teacher advance notice that you will be leaving. When it comes time to leave, the office will send a message to the classroom. Parents should come to the office… not the classroom when they need to pick you up.
#1. CALL YOUR STUDY BUDDY AND WRITE DOWN THE ASSIGNMENT THAT YOU MISSED. (have the name and telephone numbers of 2 study buddies for each class)
#2 WHEN YOU RETURN TO SCHOOL, GO TO THE OFFICE AND GET AN
ADMIT SLIP BEFORE YOUGO TO YOUR CLASSES. (bring
a note from home for an excused absence)
#3 SHOW YOUR ADMIT SLIP TO EACH TEACHER WHOSE CLASS YOU
MISSED AT THE BEGINNING OF THAT CLASS. PICK UP ANY WORKSHEETS THAT YOU NEED TO
GET. Keep your admit slip until you have attended all the classes you
missed.
#4 VISIT YOUR TEACHERS DURING SEMINAR/LUNCH IF YOU NEED HELP WITH THE ASSIGNMENT.
#5 THE GENERAL EXPECTATION IS THAT MISSING WORK MUST BE TURNED IN NO LATER THAN 2 DAYS AFTER YOU RETURN. EXCEPTIONS MUST BE DISCUSSED WITH YOUR TEACHERS.
#6 WRITE ABSENT AT THE TOP OF YOUR PAPER…IF IT IS TURNED IN LATE BECAUSE YOU WERE ABSENT.
**If you return on the day of a pre-announced test you will be expected in most cases to take the test with the rest of the class.
A successful student comes to class prepared…even if they have been absent!
Sustained Silent Reading---SSR
Why?
When the reading skills of 210,000 students from 32
countries compared, it was found that, regardless of income levels, the highest
scores were from students:
a.
who were read to by
their teachers daily and
b.
who read the most pages for pleasure daily.
Reading for pleasure is
highly correlated to achievement of reading skills. SSR provides time for you to read for pleasure.
When?
Gold days from
1340-1400.
What?
SSR requires BOOKS but
not textbooks and no comics or magazines.
Student’s Responsibilities:
a.
Bring reading material
to SSR each day.
b.
Accept a book from a
teacher if reading material has been forgotten.
c.
Read SILENTLY for
twenty minutes.
d.
ENJOY!
Jubilee House Paper Heading
The teachers of Jubilee
House thought it would be easier for students if each of the core teachers had
the same requirements for how to put a heading on their papers. Below is a sample. Students will make life much easier for themselves and their
teachers if they will please follow the guidelines. The heading goes on the
right side of the paper on the lines.
First
and Last name
Subject
and Block
Date
Assignment
Student can earn TICKETS TO SUCCESS in a number of ways. Jubilee teachers award tickets to success for different things, but some ways to earn tickets might be:
a. Having your assignment book signed by a parent/guardian every week.
b. Helping the teacher or another student.
c. Everyone in the class having the homework completed on time.
When you earn a TICKET TO SUCCESS, you write your name on it and give it to the teacher who awarded it. At the end of the quarter, tickets are chosen at random from those that have been submitted. If your ticket is drawn, you WIN a prize of your choice. The more tickets that you have earned, the better your chances of winning a prize!
Extracurricular Activities:
There are a number of EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES in which you may choose to participate. Not all activities are open to all grades; therefore, listen for announcement in the daily bulletin for details. The following activities have been available for sixth graders in recent years:
Yearbook Student Council
Drama Leadership Training
Soccer Newspaper
Volleyball Cross Country
Spirit Club Homework Club
Science Club Adventure Club
As this is a new school year, there may be different offerings. Please ask your Homebase teacher once the clubs are announced if you are interested.
Management of student behavior, a responsibility shared by students, parents, our school, and our community consists principally of teaching and reinforcing positive attitudes and behaviors.
All students are expected to conform to the school rules as outlined in the student handbook, and to the rules and routines of Jubilee House.
We would like to emphasize that the program below is not intended as punishment, but rather as a system that seeks to encourage students to “do the right thing”.
Jubilee teachers understand that most of us make mistakes and/or forget to do what is expected of us from time to time. The teachers in Jubilee House have set up a program that attempts to encourage students to learn to come to school prepared for class. Sometimes a student needs a Responsibility Reminder. If a student receives a responsibility reminder they will need to give up the first 10 minutes of their lunch/recess block in order to meet with the teacher and address the importance of bringing necessary supplies, having completed homework, etc. A student who requires several reminders may need to get a parent signature on the reminder as sometimes a parent will need to help the student understand the importance of coming to class prepared. Students who “forget” to show up for the 10 minutes may need to see an administrator to further understand the importance of meeting obligations.
If a student acts out in class or disturbs the learning of others than that student has exhibited inappropriate behavior. An infraction of this kind will earn a Detention and will be assigned a 10-minute period to be served in the classroom during the lunch/recess block.
If a student receives a third detention in a nine-week period, a phone call or note will be sent home to the sponsor. A meeting may need to take place in order to discuss the problem.
If the problem persists, then the student will be sent to an administrator for each subsequent infraction, which will then lead to further consequences.
q Many students receive on or two responsibility reminders and then learn how to come to class prepared. Chronic offenders are few.
q Some students receive detentions. They usually learn the appropriate ways to behave in a short amount of time. Chronic offenders are rare.
