School Supplies

The school provides textbooks, workbooks, and other instructional supplies. The proper use and care of these items should be stressed to help the child develop a feeling of personal responsibility for books and supplies furnished for his/her use. Students who lose or damage school books or other property will be held accountable for the loss or damage. Pupils are expected to supply their own paper, notebooks, pencils, scissors, and other small expendable items. Your child's teacher will give your child a list of supplies needed for his/her class.

Books and Materials

In most classes, textbooks will be issued without charge. Please note that each student is responsible for all books, supplies, and equipment received. If a book or other school material is lost, follow these steps:

1. Check the Lost and Found. If the item is not found, ask the Supply Clerk what the replacement cost will be, and get a "Statement of Loss" form which must be signed by the sponsor.

2. Purchase a money order payable to the "Treasurer of the United States". Personal checks or cash will not be accepted.

3. Bring the money order to the Supply Clerk and a replacement text will be issued.

Dress Code

Clothes should be appropriate for school activities and weather conditions. Since students are out on a daily basis regardless or the weather going to and from class, students should be prepared with proper clothing. Ensure that your child's full name is on every article he/she brings to school. This protects you from loss and is a great help to the teacher. Student appearance should not be a distraction to the normal educational process. Examples of inappropriate clothing are hats worn inside the building, bare feet, short shorts, tops or shirts showing the midriff, T-shirts bearing suggestive words/pictures or profanity, pants with holes, etc. This list is not to be considered complete. The administration reserves the right to determine what clothing is appropriate in the context given above. The sponsor will be notified and the student will be sent home to change the clothes that day, when possible, or he/she will be told not to wear that attire again when it is physically impossible for the student to go home and change. HATS WORN IN THE BUILDING WILL BE CONFISCATED AND RETURNED.

Visitors

All parents and official visitors are to report first to the Main Office upon arrival in the school. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS POLICY. Parents are advised to give a 24hr advance notification for visits in the classroom. Students may not invite visitors to school without prior approval. This includes other DoDDS students and former Lakenheath Middle School students. Students who wish to bring a guest (at least 6th grade or equivalent) must receive the approval of all teachers concerned and then have final approval given by the Principal or an Assistant Principal at least three (3) days prior to the intended visit. Students who have withdrawn from school or on suspension may not be in the buildings or on school grounds UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, and may no take part in any school sponsored activities. No one is permitted in school buildings after the school day, on weekends, holidays, or at other times that the school is closed. Exceptions are only for those who have received prior authorization or under the direct supervision of a staff member. Infractions of these rules is considered unlawful entry and will be turned over to the security forces.

Attendance Procedures
New Policy:
Assigned personnel with family members attending DoDDS Schools on RAF
Lakenheath or RAF Feltwell will notify the schools no later than the dayprior for planned absences. For unplanned absences (e.g. illness) or late arrivals, notify the schools before 0800. DoDDS will attempt to contact parents within one hour of discovering an unexcused absence. Doing so requires parents to maintain current contact information with the school. If information is not current or incorrect, DoDDS will initiate contact through the appropriate command post which will contact the individual's chain of command/supervision. For individuals so contacted, commanders will counsel and, if necessary, initiate appropriate disciplinary action for repeat occurrences.Force protection includes knowing where your family memebrs are. In conjunction with our schools, the above procedures will help ensure we maintain that awareness. Doing so will preclude a potential future tragedy.

The DoDDS educational program is organized on the basic assumptions that all students will attend school/class; regularly punctually. Adherence to the school attendance policy is the responsibility of the parents and students. Parents must consistently and periodically informed of student absences in order for them to exercise parental control and responsibility. The purpose of this action is to establish patterns of good attendance and to assure that educational programs have an opportunity to be successful. No unauthorized absence can be taken lightly.

When a student has been absent for any reason, the sponsor or parent MUST provide the school with a written explanation for the absence within two days of the absence. The note must include the following information:

I . Student's name (first and last) 2. Date(s) and/or class periods of absence 3. Reason for absence 4. Sponsor/parent signature

Upon returning to school, students will present their note to the main office before 0825 in the morning. An excused or unexcused admit slip will be given to the student to present to his/her classroom teachers. If the sponsor's note is forgotten, the student has one more school day (for a total of two school days) to bring in a valid note; he/she has an unexcused absence until that time.

Monitoring Absences

Attendance records will be reviewed periodically and follow-up action will be taken for excessive and/or unexcused absences.

Parents/sponsors/legal guardians shall be contacted about unexcused absences and reminded of the DoDDS mandatory attendance policy and their personal responsibility to ensure the pupil's regular and punctual attendance. School personnel shall take appropriate administrative action with respect to excessive or unexcused absences or instances of tardiness. A concerted effort will be made to prevent and remedy truancy in the early stages.

NOTE: The British 1944 Education Act specifies that parents are responsible for seeing that dependents, under 16 years of age, attend school. All U.S. personnel stationed in the UK fall under the requirements of this law. Excessive absenteeism or truancy may result in British legal action.

Excused Absences

Excused absences are granted for the following:

1. Illness - An illness of more than 3 days should be verified through medical documentation; if not, it may beconsidered an unexcused absence.
2. Family emergency - Severe illness or death in the family; a local hardship situation.3. Religious observance - A religious holy day. Religious retreats or trips are NOT considered excused absences because these events should occur on a non-school day.
3. Educational Family trip
4. Medical appointments
5. School sponsored activities occurring away from Lakenheath, as well as in-house absences (counseling, testing, or special assemblies) - A note from the parent is not required nor is an admit slip issued for
students in these cases.

There will be no academic penalties for excused absences so long as the student makes up the missed work within a reasonable period of time as determined by the teacher(s). If a student is absent for more than 2 days parents may call the reception secretary and request assignments. The parent may pick up the assignments fro on secretary 24 hours after the call. The sponsor should notify the reception secretary a minimum of three days prior to the start of a family trip. Such trips should be planned only when the taking of leave during school holidays is not possible. The student should make up as much work as possible prior to the trip.

Unexcused Absences

All absences not meeting the criteria for excused absences will be considered unexcused absences (except truancy - see Discipline Policy). Failure to present a valid note within two (2) school days of returning to school will result in an unexcused absence. Students will not be granted make-up privileges for unexcused absences, and the grade for each day (or portion thereof) missed will be a "0" (zero). All days missed for a suspension are considered unexcused absences; however, make up of homework and or tests are authorized.

Tardy Policy and Procedures

Ist Tardy: Teacher has conference with student.
2 nd Tardy: Teacher has conference (phone/email or in person) with the sponsor regarding the tardy.
3 rd Tardy: Student is reported to an administrator who will suspend the student pending a conference with the parent to resolve the issue.
Students need to ensure that they are in class on time. Late arrival in class disrupts the learning atmosphere and the student will have missed vital information that may result in his/her grade being lowered. If the tardy problem persists, the administrators reserve the right to assign more serious consequences.

Leaving Campus During the School Day

Students are to remain at school the entire school day. Exceptions to this policy are listed below:

I Illness/injury: Should a student become ill or be injured at school, the sponsor will be notified and, if the illness or injury is serious enough, the sponsor or his/her representative must come to the school to pick up the student. The sponsor should report in at the Main Office and sign the student out of school.

2. Medical/counseling appointment: Either (1) the student may bring a signed note from the sponsor giving the date and time of the appointment or (2) the sponsor can come to the Main Office to pick up the student for an appointment. IN EITHER CASE, THE STUDENT MUST BE SIGNED OUT IN THE MAIN OFFICE BEFORE LEAVING CAMPUS.

Lunch

Students must eat in the cafeteria. The Shoppette is off-limits to students during school hours. (0800-1615)

Buses

Feltwell School Bus Office serves LMS. RAF Feltwell, Bldg. 34, DSN 226-7331 or 01638-527331/7332/7319. Hours of Operation are 0830-1430, 1530-1645. Buses depart 10 minutes after school is dismissed and students must report immediately to the departure area. All students must carry their bus passes on a daily basis as they are required for admittance to the bus. Students should sit in their assigned seats at all times. Base officials will deal with any misbehavior or problems on the bus. Students could lose the privilege of riding the bus. Bus passes must be obtained from the school bus office at RAF Feltwell. The basic policy for bus passes is NO PASS-NO RIDE. If a student has lost a bus pass, the bus driver will report this to the Schools' Officer (LK 7-5077). Students are allowed to travel on the bus in the morning without a pass, but may not ride home without a pass.

Late Bus Arrival

If a school bus arrives shortly after the beginning of the school day, students should go the main office and receive a late-bus pass..

Your parents must officially check you in at the office if you arrive late to campus. If you miss your bus and ride the shuttle to school you must have a note from your parents or your parents should call the school to let us know that you will be taking the shuttle.

Activity Buses

Activity buses are provided only for students participating in school sanctioned extra-curricular activities. Activity buses depart from the campus about 4:30 on days that activities are scheduled. Student Placement

It is DoDDS policy that each student considered for retention or acceleration (double promotion) be screened and evaluated by the Lakenheath School Placement Committee. This Placement Committee will meet with parents and classroom teachers and the student, when appropriate. The committee makes a recommendation to the principal concerning placement. The principal makes the final decision.

Report Cards & Grading System

Report cards are normally issued four times per school year. The report cards used by DoDDS may differ from those used in the U.S. Teachers will fully explain the grading system used in their classes at the beginning of the school year and at various times thereafter. Please ask for a conference with the teacher, should you have questions. Students are expected to complete all assigned work and take all scheduled tests. Unsatisfactory progress of students will be reported at the midpoint of each marking period.

Grades are issued as follows:

MARK PERCENTAGE (DoDDS Scale)
A - Excellent 90 - 100
B - Good 80- 89
C - Average 70- 79
D - Poor 60- 69
F - Unsatisfactory 59 and below

+ (plus) or - (minus)

Honor Roll

An Honor Roll will be published at the end of each marking period. Students achieving a 3.4 grade point average during a marking period are eligible for the Honor Roll. A grade lower than a "C" in any class, however, disqualifies a student from eligibility for the Honor Roll. Various Honor organizations exist at LMS. National Junior Honor Society (7'th &8th ), Number I Club (6th) and Leadership Training (6th _ 8 ). Each organization has standards ranging from one semester of residency at LMS, leadership, 3.4 grade point, service projects in school and community, membership in school activities, and being of a good character. Contact each activity sponsor for more detailed information.

Schedule changes

SCHEDULE CHANGES WILL NOT TAKE PLACE EXCEPT IN THE MOST UNUSUAL CIRCUMSTANCES ONCE A STUDENT AND PARENT HAVE SELECTED THE COURSES AND SIGNED OFF ON THE SCHEDULE. Reasons such as "not liking the course," personality conflicts, are not valid reasons for a schedule change. Decisions regarding course selections and learning to deal with people are both part of the overall schedule process. Any changes in the schedule must first be considered by the Lakenheath School Placement Committee.

Accelerations

A student withdrawing on PCS Orders to CONUS within twenty (20) school days prior to the end of the semester may accelerate by notifying the school office in writing at least thirty (30) days prior to transfer. Additional assignments will be given to cover the work of the days missed in each subject, and a semester examination may be given in each subject.

In most cases, non-compliance with the 30 day written notice to be given to the school office will result in only withdrawal grades being given. ALSO NOTE THAT ACCELERATIONS CAN BE MADE ONLY ON PCS ORDERS. During the school year, the earliest date a student may withdraw after properly accelerating is twenty school days before the end of a semester. These dates are posted yearly on the school calendar.

Transfer and Withdrawal

Families anticipating a PCS move during the school year should take the following steps in obtaining proper clearance from Lakenheath Middle School:

I At least five (5) days in advance of departure, and earlier when possible, please provide the school with a copy of PCs and a note stating the student's last day of school.
2. On the student's last day of school, he/she will come to the school office to obtain withdrawal papers. A copy of the student"s report card or transfer grades will be issued by the office upon final clearance. The student's last day will be a full day attending all classes as scheduled.
3. When requested, the Registrar will provide an unofficial information copy of the student's transcript. However this item is notnecessary to enroll in another school - the withdrawal paper will suffice. "Hand carrying" official student records is not possible. Official transcripts are issued only upon request from the gaining school with parental permission obtained by that school.

ONCE A STUDENT HAS WITHDRAWN, HE/SHE MAY NOT RETURN TO SCHOOL AS A GUEST.

Health Care

Students needing to see the school nurse must have a hall pass from their assigned teacher. Students who are ill should be kept at home. Please do not send ill students to school as the sponsor will be contacted to take them home. The sponsor will be contacted first at the duty telephone, then at the home telephone, then the emergency contact number. Students will not be allowed to walk home if they are ill. A parent must come to the school to sign them out and take him/her home.

Lost and Found

There is a general lost and found in the main office for items such as clothes, book bags, and valuables. For items left in PE there is a lost and found in the gym. All of your personal items such as bags, clothing, instruments, and equipment must be clearly marked with your name. If you find an article of value, turn it into the office.

School Lockers

Students are assigned a locker by their seminar teacher. Students are responsible for supplying their own locks, but only locks with short shackles may be used. Bicycle locks and U.S. government locks are not permitted. A gym locker will also be assigned by the gym teacher. A lock is required for this locker as well. This locker is for gym clothes and materials only. Students should not leave valuables in their lockers (lunch tickets, money, etc.) The school will accept no responsibility for the loss of items stored in a locker.

Telephone

OFFICE TELEPHONES ARE NOT NORMALLY AVAILABLE FOR STUDENT USE Forgetting homework or lunch, requesting permission to stay after school, etc., are not valid excuses for the use of school telephones. ONLY IN THE MOST UNUSUAL CIRCUMSTANCES OR IN EMERGENCIES WILL MESSAGES FROM PARENTS BE DELIVERED TO A STUDENT.

Pets

Animals will not be permitted on the school premises unless prior arrangements have been made with the classroom teacher or school administration. Pets must be in a cage and accompanied by an adult owner while at school.

Cafeteria and Lunch Regulations

A hot lunch program is offered by AAFES in the school cafeteria. Students may also bring their lunch from home and eat in the cafeteria. You may purchase school lunch tickets in advance at the BX Cashier's cage or pay cash (American currency only) on the day you purchase a lunch. All lunch tickets should be filled out with the student's name before they come to school. If the ticket is lost or stolen then it can be identified. After you eat your lunch, you may leave the cafeteria. You may not return to the cafeteria once you have left it. Failure to follow the above guidelines will result in disciplinary action.
